When you’ve got a room that doesn’t get a lot of light, it can be challenging to keep that space feeling bright and airy.
There are easy ways to help like painting the walls white or adding some good lighting, but when you’ve got the difficult combo of a dimly lit room and a dark floor, using the right rug is the way to go.
The right color for the job
It’s probably a good idea to stay away from using dark colors like burgundy or brown, but playing with a rug that has a lighter base and uses patterned color on top can actually help brighten the room.
Pops of color definitely give off a vibrant energy that can really make a room come alive, sometimes that’s all you need to get a dark room feeling bright.
Using white decor in a dark room is kind of a no-brainer, but don’t feel like you can’t add some color.
When it comes to size, not too big and not too small are basics that will help your room feel balanced and proportionate. In any room, a rug that’s too big can feel overwhelming and claustrophobic, especially in a dimly lit room.
You’d think going the opposite route and outfitting a room with a rug that’s too small would create more openness but funny enough it can feel equally as awkward as a rug that’s too big.
A good place to start is getting a rug that would be at least the same length or slightly longer than your sofa.
A 6×9 sized rug can usually accomplish this. Try keeping the furniture legs off the rug by placing it just in front of the sofa. This can help keep the rug central to the room and allow space for additional furniture like a couple of accent chairs and a coffee table.
