Dragons In Islamic and Chinese Art
Examples:
Yuan Dynasty “mei-p’ing” Porcelain Vase
It is interesting to note that the Yuan Dynasty is the Mongol dynasty.
The first thing I thought when I saw this dragon in the Yuan Dynasty vase is that it bore a strong similarity to the Dragons of Aqa Mirak.
Margin illustrations from the “Golestan of Sa’di”
Origin: Attributed to Persian artist Aqa Mirak, Tabriz, circa 1530.
Mirak was a prominent artist in the Safavid court in the first half of the sixteenth century. He was also copied in Mughal India in the latter 16th and 17th centuries.
Detail: The Widener Mughal Animal Carpet
Origin: Lahore, circa 1595.
One of the most famous examples of a dragon rug pattern is the Widener Mughal carpet, perhaps the greatest Mughal carpet of all time.
