Here we have a brush drawing from the Keir collection. It is a Mughal copy of an earlier Persian work. The reason I chose it was to illustrate how a later artist may copy an earlier style. Please compare this to Dragon & Horseman – 17th c Mughal(?).
Artists learned their craft by copying earlier works. This is the product of a Mughal artist from late in the reign of Akbar. Spuhler notes the stipple besides the faces and by the arm of the cupbearer as an indicator of Mughal provenance.
Please note the thicker thighs and calves. Mughal artists drew bodies with larger porportions than Persian artist drew prior to the reign of Abbas in Persia. The horse also has the shorter Mughal style neck. At this point I do not know if it was an artistic convention that caused them to draw shorter necked horses or if they were realisticly drawing a different breed of horse.
