Plate 57. Persia, Circa 1500, Collection of L. Cartier, Paris, France
La Miniature En Orient by Ernst Kuhnel 1925
This miniature is a single page portrait formerly in the Ducote collection. This same figure is found in several versions in the miniatures of the Safavi period. A similar woman, colored differently, is found in Martin’s discussion of the Bellini Collection. M. Sarre possessed another example. The composition is very similar but reversed. A lesser and cruder version can be found in the Marteau collection with the signature of the master Pir Ali.
Translator’s Note: In his discussion of this miniature Stuart Cary Welch attributed this piece to Mirza Ali circa 1540. 1. This seems appropriate
Portrait of a Young Woman
Seated Princess
Attributed to Mohammadi, Herat, circa 1565, By Soudavar. 2. While obviously a copy of the earlier work there are many key differences in execution. Some of the clues to attribution are the light green and the technique and color of the cypress tree.
