How can we track Caucasian pricing?
Question:
Dear Barry,
I would like to know if there are any index or reference publications you follow to keep up on pricing of carpets? Specifically, Caucasians from the late-1800s or early-1900s?
I know price depends on many factors including condition, uniqueness, age, etc., and I have traditionally followed the auction sales (Sotheby’s and Christie’s) but wonder if there is a better indicator available on the web which can be used for indicative purposes?
Like any pieces of art, the price is in the eye of the beholder, but it is always nice to have a base from which to compare.
Any comments or direction you can provide would be helpful.
Best Regards,
John
Answer:
Hello John,
There is nowhere on the net to get really good auction coverage. If you want to stay up to date on market trends, you need Hali. They have the very best information. I think Ralph Kaffel provides most of the actual reviewing, at least on US auctions, and he is about the best there is in the field. Hali is not inexpensive but it is well worth every cent. Unless you can get Kaffel to call you after each sale, Hali is the best: www.Hali.com.
Best wishes,
Barry
