Jan Van Eyck: The Arnolfini Marriage
Jan Van Eyck,
The Arnolfini Marriage: Giovanni Arnolfini and His Wife Giovanna Cenami. 1434. Tempera on wood.
This is one of the paintings that is embroiled in the Hockney versus Stork debate over the use of optical devices. See Scientists debate the theory that Renaissance masters used optical projections to complete their works . I have spoken with Professor Stork on this matter and he has a strong argument. I am not totally convinced by either side so far and I look forward to more on the Optical Society of America’s annual meeting, October 10-14 in Rochester, NY.
