Ghoochan / Quchan Rugs
Examples of Ghoochan / Quchan Rugs & Carpets
Ghoochan rugs can look very much like Caucasian Rugs and others can be mistaken for Baluch Rugs. Ghoochan or Quchan is an important collection point for Kurdish and Afshar tribal and village rugs. The rugs share designs with Northwest and Caucasian Kurdish Rugs and Afshar.
Abbas Safavi (Shah Abbas the Great) ruled Iran from 1588 – 1629 at the beginning of his reign Persia was in serious danger. The Ottoman Turks had taken Tabriz and most of Northwest Persia. Abbas Safavi Shah made a treaty with the Ottoman and Persia was forced to pay tribute. While on the eastern front the Uzbek came as far west as Mashad. Abbas used Kurds and Afshar to retake Mashad and gave those Afshar Turks and Kurdish mercenaries land in the Quchan area as a reward for service and as a line of defense against the Uzbek and their Turkmen vassals. The descendents of those Kurds and Afshar live in the Quchan area and produce rugs.
When we say Kuchon we are referring to a rug production area about equal to the pink area in the upper right corner between Ashkhabad and Mashhad. Keep in mind this is the Kurd map the Afshar occupy roughly the same area.

Ghoochan Rugs Quchan Kurd Long Rug
This is an antique and particularly nice example of a Quchon Kurd rug. The soft red is a key identifier for old Quchan rugs.
A large, circa 1900, Quchan Kurd pile rug from North East Iran. The designs in this rug are related to West Persian Kurdish groups that moved from their ancestral homelands to Eastern Persia in the 17th century. Some of the design influences of the noble West Persian Bakthiari tribe are also represented in the borders. The Quchan Kurds primarily produced weavings only for their own utilitarian purposes, thus pile rugs of this type are very seldom available in the market. They are rarely seen outside of the tribal villages near Meshed. In addition to the colorful palette, note the large center medallion, the graphic imagery in the central fields and the dramatic ivory white borders. All natural dyes.
