~1880 Persian Khamseh “bird rug”, 4’8″ X 8’. Made in Fars district of southwest Iran. Woven on an ivory, gray and brown wool non-depressed warp with two shoots of red wool weft between each row of symmetrical knots. It is dyed with a wide variety of abrashed vegetal dyes. It has three stepped diamond, ivory ground medallions. The medallions and the dark blue field are both filled with a whimsical array of birds, animals, flowers and plants. The main border is a repeating design of octagons with eight-pointed stars separated by groups of four small botehs on a yellow ground.

Classic three medallion variant with eccentric field devices of flower and bird forms. An unusual cane design outer field forms a compartment like drawing. Border contains well drawn geometric floral variant. Woven circa 1900 in Southern Persia. An unusual example with great wool quality and outstanding pile.
