Qashqai rugs average 70 to 170 knots per square inch according to Stone. Traditional Qashqai rugs have all wool construction including wool wefts and warps. Newer village pieces may have cotton wefts and are generally more coarsely woven.

Warp: Wool, Z2S, ivory, alternate warps strongly depressed.

Weft: Wool, Z2 2 shoots, red or ivory.

Pile: Wool asymmetrical knot open to the left.

Density: 13-14 H, 14-16 V.

Sides: 1 cords of multiple warps, double overcast in red and blue stripes.

Ends: 4 inch kilim in stripes of navy and red with geometric designs in white and blue, warp fringe

Size: Approximately 5 ft. by 3 ft. 9 in. (1.52 m. by 1.14 m.)

Colors: Strawberry, madder red, ochre, chamois, ivory, cordovan, azure, spruce, peacock blue, auburn, mahogany, indigo, aubergine, black.

Unusual Antique Gashgai (Qashqai) Tribal Persian Rug 4’ 8” by 6’ 8.” Veggie Dye Hand Spun All Wool.

This piece was woven by a woman from the Ghashgai (Qashqai) tribes in Southwest Iran near the city of Shiraz. The rug was hand knotted in 1955. The rug is all wool, hand spun, all natural (vegetable) dye is used. The rug has been in storage for most of its life and is in excellent condition. Full pile with all the original fringes. The exact measurements are 4’ 8” wide by 6’ 8” long without the fringe. There are 8” of fringe on each side with a 2” kilim.

The weaver is depicting a scene from the ruins of Persopolis (Takht-e-Jamshid). Persopolis used to be the Capital of the Persian Empire more than 2500 years ago. The weaver is depicting the fight between King Darius and the monster. There are other symbols from Persopolis, as well as tribal motifs throughout the rug The actual scene is carved in stone on one of the walls in Persopolis.

Pile: Wool, symmetrical knot

Density: 9-10 horizontal, 12 vertical

Sides: Wool, 1 cord of 9 warps, overcast in red and green stripes, a single tassel of solid red, blue, navy or green approximately every 9 in.

Ends: Upper – knotted warp fringe, followed by 2 in. of red kilim with 1 in. band of narrow stripes of blues and greens in center. Lower – 1/2 in. of narrow multi-striped kilim of red, blues and greens, then 1/2 in. dark brown kilim followed by cabled warp fringe

Colors: Deep madder red, deep terra-cotta, ochre, bone, spruce green, indigo, cerulean blue, mahogany, black

Description: the ivory field with a central flower-filled urn flanked by crimson cypress trees, dark walnut surround, deep blue palmette and curled leaf border, dice skirts.

Dimensions: approx. 132 x 94 cm

A small size of exquisite quality, finely knotted, with violet silk shots. In Persia, as well as in the Arab world, such pieces, produced only by the artful knotters of the Gashguli tribe, were of the utmost importance. Very good condition with high pile and original finishes round. The violet shots have in some places led to slight wear, also visible from the front discolorations.
