Haji Jalili Tabriz Rugs
Examples of Haji Jalili Tabriz Rugs & Carpets
Haji Jalili was for many years the best grade of Tabriz rugs. They were made in Marand on the main road northwest of Tabriz about half way to Jolfa on the Azerbaijan border. Keep in mind that Tabriz in this context does not refer to a specific city but rather to a region. This area is now called the Province of Azarbayian-e Sharqi. Of this region the best carpets circa 1900 were attributed to the workshop of Haji Jalili in the town of Marand.

Silk Tabriz Carpet Haj Jalily
The technique of this perfect silk rug is superb and it has a wonderful vitality and robustness. On a rich burgundy field a finely etched prayer niche holding a holy lamp is observed. A deep blue vase holding an arrangement of branches and flower heads dominates the main field. Surrounded by two elegant thin trees and massed mainly by small blossom and branches. This is akin to the image of paradise spoken of in the Quran, a lush garden filled with delights and to which the faithful aspires and prays. The border has extended cartouches containing inscriptions from the Quran. Apart from excellence of its technique, this is an important work whose design incorporates a vibrant main field with a superb border with ancient echoes.
