Antique Bukhara Suzani

 Antique Bukhara Suzani

3 foot 7 inch by 5 foot 9 inch.

The more Suzani I see the more convinced I am that this must be a Suzani Embroidery  Wall Hanging from Bukhara. I base that on the leaf like trellis and the pomegranate blossom field with the floral disk border. The work appears to be tambour hooked twisted silk on cotton. Such work is seen in pieces attributed to Bukhara.

It is traditional for those young ladies who can to make one of these for their dowry to be used as wall hangings for special occasions. As such when one of these has stayed in Asia until very recently as this one has, they stay in great shape with great color. The faded ones generally came to the west much earlier and are exposed to more light. This one has been cared for.
